Free Tutoring Can We Do Without a Private Teacher

Free Tutoring Can We Do Without a Private Teacher Is Free Tutoring Enough? ChaptersFree Tutoring Websites and Apps: Finding a   Methodical Management SystemWhat Are Some Free Online Tutoring Sites and Apps?  Apps for Mastering the DayIs Free Tutoring Really the Right Solution for a Failing Student?Online Tutoring: Concrete Advantages of a Private TutorHomework is often stressful, and not just for the students. Many parents are stressed, too, in having to make sure their children get it done, check their answers and help them with anything they didn’t understand. But how much more stressful is it when your child is struggling?Free online tutoring or tutoring apps for your smartphone can seem very appealing to anyone in a low-income household. They allow users to learn while often introducing an element of fun thanks to quizzes and games with animations and fun graphics. They’re a good way to spike a child’s interest in physics, geography, maths, science and engineering. However, using them requires a certain base motivation and the willingness to make ti me and include them in your scheduling. So:Can these apps be enough to turn the tide and improve a child’s numeracy or reading skills on their own, or are they just one element in a holistic approach to tutoring? Can apps and online tutoring resources really replace private tutoring programs?learning community with forums and the opportunity to chat live with an educator to help students connect (many language-learning apps do this). In that vein, passing your GSCE or A-levels is no walk in the park, and even students who are not failing might appreciate a bit of supplemental instruction.Books alone often fail to keep a students’ interest as they crave interactivity. In view of this, smartphone apps seem like the ideal solution. However, you need to find the right app: something suitable both for their level and for their expectations to help them succeed and make progress. There are a number of sites and apps out there. To make the right choice, don’t hesitate to look at the testim onials in parenting forums and app-review sites and blogs. Additionally, some apps offer a trial period, letting the student try out a few games and progress for a few levels before you have to pay to continue. This trick lets you try out online tutoring free before committing yourself. But for this type of academic support to work, the online classroom of your choice needs to be used with a certain regularity. Staying power is important for any kind of learning. As a parent, your job will be to accompany your child and support them outside the classroom - otherwise, the site or app will hardly be useful.Learning apps are a fun way to improve your grades, but parents or tutors should keep an eye and track your progress. Photo credit: US Department of Education on Visual huntHowever, if you are old enough not to have your parents looking over your shoulder (though support is always a good thing), you will have to find your own motivation and discipline:As fun as it can be to spend some time with educational games online, it is important to know where your weaknesses are in order to make real progress. Once you know what you need, you can choose your apps to address your weaknesses rather than waste hours on a game that teaches you what you already do well.Academic tutoring does not need to be all-encompassing. Often, a student only has trouble in one subject. Why would you need to sign up for remedial chemistry when your problem is with your second language? And even if you need a free math tutor - you might be fine with fractions but need help with integral equations.A lot of sites and apps focus on a single subject. So you need to be honest with yourself about where your problems lie to find the right, individualized solution on your road to academic success. Honing your study skills means knowing if your problem with economics comes because you need help with the mathematics or if your certified teacher’s lecture somehow fails to convey how the basic theory w orks and your textbook is of no help at all. It also means preparing your classes with apps and taking your exams online to try and improve your score.Set aside a certain time during the day or week - make an appointment on your smartphone calendar, if you like - for using your app. Make it part of your routine. Apps won’t help you progress if you don’t use them!Join the discussion: can learning apps really help students progress? What Are Some Free Online Tutoring Sites and Apps?Education websitesSome sites are quite extensive, offering not only information packets in written or video form but also quizzes and flashcards for revision. But there is a lot of choice in learning websites.BBC Bitesize offers summaries and quizzes for every subject at every level of every conceivable British  curriculum, from geometry to algebra to the Humanities.Generally, at the primary level all sorts of learning info and quiz sites such as National Geographic Kids or Oxford Owl, which offers resour ces for parents and educators to make learning more fun.At higher levels, look for exam revision websites to help consolidate what you need for your finals, GSCE or A-Levels. Apart from BBC Bitesize mentioned above, there are numerous such sites such as s-cool or school exams. You can also consider online learning programs such as Skillshare, FutureLearn or OpenLearn, where the courses -often at a college tutoring level - are usually free upon enrollment. This is linked to either a trial period or certain classes. Generally, any course ending in qualifications (diplomas at various levels) are paying.Additionally, Parliament offers online resources for teachers that are equally useful for students trying to deepen their understanding of a subject. Many libraries also offer some form of online resource for schoolchildren, including audiobooks or ebooks available to download.Revision apps and websites: why not revise with a friend? Photo credit: Anders Printz on VisualhuntAlternativesBu t websites are not the only free tutoring resource. There are a number of YouTube channels and video blogs dedicated to homework help for calculus 1 or chemistry. There, a peer tutor or certified teacher will provide instruction videos on specific subjects, from psychology to trigonometry with tips for test taking and problem-solving, to reading and writing courses at kindergarten level or higher with interesting visuals.Today, it is possible to receive homework help for free if you have access to a computer. Do you prefer to be out and about and focus on independent learning? There are apps for you! Once downloaded onto your smartphone, you can use them anywhere. A good motivation to play and learn.revision (an app) is a mobile app letting you review the curriculum of any subject, allowing you to prep for exams over the school year. Then there are apps such as YUP that will connect your child with live, one-on-one online tutoring (for a fee) who can help them review the coursework ensuring student success on any assignment.Other apps are more specific as to subject, whether it be improving your literacy, accounting skills, or your study strategies. Is Free Tutoring Really the Right Solution for a Failing Student?“No child left behind.” While the sentiment behind this slogan (reminiscent of the US-Marines) is admirable, it’s not quite as easy as it looks. When a student has difficulties, it is oft en difficult to re-motivate them toward learning with some simple tutoring sessions. They will need things explained to them in a novel and interesting way - and that doesn’t just mean interactive whiteboards. This is where apps have an advantage. Learning applications often present learning and revision in the form of games, something they will enjoy playing in order to advance and earn more points rather than just something they do to appease their parents. They don’t have to write an essay or turn in homework but feel like they’re playing rather than studying.Designers working on the apps often work together with schoolteachers. They will try and find the middle ground between the game elements and education. A true enrichment of app games, of which your child enjoys the fruits.Apps are a good way to connect to today’s youth. They are also easy to find and get. No need to clean up before opening a tutoring session. No need for an extra lamp or some cookies left out. It is e nough to own a smartphone. If you want to track your child’s progress, most learning apps offer some sort of tracker for parents or educators to document how well they are doing. This lets you see the student’s progress and see whether the app is working. Therefore, downloadable apps are definitely useful. The fact that they are free or generally cost very little (a few pounds only) makes it possible to download several apps and try them out to see which ones the student truly reinforce the child’s developmental progress. However, at school, there are also the teachers. Even if quiz games and learning apps are an asset in helping children learn, they will never replace a teacher’s knowledge and pedagogical theory. The apps complement lessons and one-on-one tutoring rather than replacing them.Did you know there are also plentiful free tutoring resources in the UK?Websites and apps are wonderful tools, but they can't replace one-on-one attention from a private tutor. Photo credit : US Department of Education on Visual huntOnline Tutoring: Concrete Advantages of a Private TutorEven if the idea of benefiting from free tutoring is very attractive, students in difficulty will need a teacher to guide them and help them progress. These students often feel lost, have trouble understanding - they need things explained differently from the classroom so they have a chance to grasp the concepts. What’s more, using a live tutor will help your child get into a certain learning rhythm and give them study tips. Achieving a study rhythm encourages the learning process. Something he or she will have to do on their own with apps. But what are the advantages of a private tutor for your student?Unlike apps, taking lessons with a private tutor means you are both physically present. This allows the tutor to assess his students’ mental state. He or she can see from their expressions whether or not they understood and adapt their lessons accordingly. A school counsellor only sees the children at fairly large intervals and teachers in classrooms are face to face with dozens of students and may fail to notice the one most in need of their attention. The advantages of a private tutor are numerous. The private tutor can personalise his lessons depending on his students and guide them toward the exercises that work best for them. Special attention in the right place can change everything.Learning alone can be difficult: staying focused and motivated is easier with a tutor. Photo credit: Street Photography candid on VisualHuntWho hasn’t fallen in love with a subject because of the person teaching it?A good chemistry between student and teacher is important for good learning conditions and motivating students. A good reason for preferring a teacher (for example, from a tutoring center near you or a referral from happy parents) to apps. With the Internet, it’s quite easy to find the right person. On Superprof, the profiles of each tutor is presented in full, so yo u can see where their areas of expertise lie but also what their passions RE. A way to reassure parents and students.Though apps can be useful for helping students succeed, the presence of an actual teacher for private lessons in French, History or Geography will always be the best way to improve grades. Now discover other free online tutoring resources available to students in the UK!

7 Things That You Absolutely Shouldnt Put In Your Resume - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / 7 Things That You Absolutely Shouldnt Put In Your Resume - Introvert Whisperer 7 Things That You Absolutely Shouldnt Put In Your Resume   Resumes are viewed as opportunities to display capability. In fact, you are told to include all information you think will help you secure the job. However, this invitation seems to have been abused and is costing more people the job instead of offering them the opportunity. The reality is that employers receive hundreds of applications for every advert put out. This denies them the luxury of dealing with irrelevant entries in your resume. A resume must therefore only contain what is valuable to your application. This means that some items must be automatically expelled from your resume. Experts have given 8 common entries that will cost you your coveted position. 1. Work Experience Are you surprised because employers want people with working experience? Well, not all experience is relevant. Identify the instances you worked and got skills that are relevant to the position you are applying for. You might have been an intern or worked part-time in a field that is not related to your qualification. Keep such information to yourself. This is why you should prepare different resumes for each job you apply so that you can include only the relevant information. The inclusion of irrelevant work experience blankets the most important information that your potential employer is interested in. The employer is left to search for details in a bulky resume. Employers do not have the time and will end up skipping your resume. Make your work experience section lean and relevant. Highlight the most relevant experience and you will capture the eye of your potential employer. 2. Personal Information Most job seekers are confused by the question, “Tell us about yourself” to the point of including personal information in their resumes. The most common personal information entered in resumes includes marital status, religion, height, parental status and hair color, among others. If your employer is interested in such information, you will be asked to provide it during the interview. Unless the advert has a provision for age, no one wants to know about it. There are very few instances where such information is necessary. If you are applying for a position in a religious organization that is sensitive about marital and religious status, you are welcome to include such details. In fact, the requirements indicated on the advert will guide you on the kind of information to provide. 3. Hobbies There is no doubt that employers want all rounded employees. But what you do during your free time will never be important to an employer. You might love biking, playing video games, taking nature photos or hiking, among many other hobbies, but they contribute zero to your work success. In fact, the next time your employer wants photos taken of operations at the firm or an event for the organization, he will never look for the employee who indicated that he enjoys taking photos. Do not ignore the hobbies all together. Find a way of bringing them up during the interview. Once your results are impressive, these hobbies will differentiate you from ordinary employees. They show that you are outgoing and take personal initiative. The company will also take pride in a good performer during a national dancing competition, or such events. 4. Praise Adjectives It is good to be tech savvy and a natural leader. It is also impressive to be a good problem solver and innovative. However, everyone can coin such phrases and include them in resumes. However, only a few can provide evidence of what their natural leadership or tech-savvy skills have done. In fact, organizations and employers are looking for these skills in their employees. However, they require employees who have demonstrated these skills. Other than state that you are a problem solver, highlight your strategic leadership and the results these skills brought to your former employer. 5. Falsehood One of the renowned entrepreneurs is famous for the quote to the effect that if you are offered a job and do not know how to do it, take the job first then learn how to do it. This does not work in the employment sector. Do not apply for a job you are not qualified and hope to learn upon employment. Do not state that you have worked for a company or employer yet you have not. Falsehood will catch up with you, even if it is later in life. Employers verify the information given in resumes. The minute they discover that it was false, you will be on your way out of the job. 6. Referees Employers will expressly state whether they need a referee in your resume or not. In fact, you will be asked to provide this information on a different page. Most employers talk to referees at the final stage of decision making. You will have passed several stages of interview and awaiting confirmation. It is advisable that you inform the referees in advance. They are in a position to give a positive word for you with prior information than when ambushed. Include referees who will add value to your job search. 7. Bluff And Inconsistencies A resume should always and only be informed by the job you are applying for. Check the qualification and information required and include it in the resume. Any other information that is not required should be ignored. In fact, you should have a resume that is brief and precise. One that provides the details required and makes it easier for the shortlisting team to spot the skills they are looking for. Based on the position applied and requirements of the candidate, make your resume as precise as possible. The ultimate guide for the information that goes into a resume is the candidate requirements on the advert. You have a responsibility of making it easy for the employer and vetting committee to spot required skills and pick them out amidst the thousands of applications made. Consult a professional in resume making to streamline your resume and make it attractive in the eyes of the employer. This is your sure way to employment. A Day in the Life at Cornell University

A Day in the Life at Cornell University The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Stephanie is a Houston tutor specializing in Literature tutoring, History tutoring, Essay Editing tutoring, and much more. She graduated from Cornell University in 2004 with a Bachelors degree in Sociology. Check out her review of her alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Stephanie: Cornell is located in the town of Ithaca, New York. The area immediately surrounding campus is referred to as College Town with Ithaca proper located just down the hill from the campus. It is a beautiful campus with rolling hills, gorges, and waterfalls. The campus is very safe, but you do need to use common sense when walking at night. The campus is divided according to schools and colleges. Each school or college within the university has its own quad or central location. On-campus bus transportation is convenient and Cornell students can purchase special bus passes for semester or annual use. Students also walk or bike to class. If you plan to walk or bike, be prepared for cold winters good boots are a must! Most of the upperclassmen, especially those who live off campus, typically have cars, but parking can be tricky on campus. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Stephanie: I felt that all of my professors, advisers, and TAs were accessible I just had to make an appointment or attend office hours. Since class sizes can vary tremendously depending on majors and colleges, I would highly recommend going to office hours to develop a rapport with the professor. This is especially true if you are interested in a particular subject or if you want to work with a particular professor later on in your collegiate life. A pre-existing relationship with a professor is also helpful if you choose to undertake a thesis because you select your own advisor. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Stephanie: All of the freshmen live together on North Campus and there are a variety of housing and dining options depending on personal preference. Answers that you provide to university polls on lifestyle and personality type will likely determine what type of housing environment in which you are placed. You can also request a certain dormitory or housing option. The dining halls on campus are first rate and accommodate every type of diet. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Stephanie: Cornells academics are highly respected and you will find top-notch professors and staff in every major and in every college. I was accepted to Cornells College of Arts and Sciences as an English major but switched majors halfway through my sophomore year to Sociology. Switching majors was easy since I was switching intra-college. It is possible to switch majors inter-college, but you will need to work closely with the registrar and your advisors to ensure that all of your academic requirements are satisfied. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Stephanie: Making friends at Cornell is a breeze! The student body is large and diverse, and there will definitely be people who have the same interests as you do! There is Greek life on campus, but there are so many other student groups that going Greek is by no means mandatory in order to feel accepted and develop close bonds with your peers. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Stephanie: The Career Center is fantastic and Cornell has a robust on-campus recruiting and interviewing initiative. All of the top companies and non-profits come to Cornell to interview. In addition, there are career fairs and the alumni network is very strong. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Stephanie: There are lots of spaces to study to fit every preference. Typically, you will find your favorite spot by the end of exams first semester. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Stephanie: Ithaca and College Town boast an impressive collection of restaurants, theatres, and bars and pubs. Cornell also has the Johnson Art Museum, the Ornithology Lab, a rare book collection, and many other state-of-the-art public resources. Cornell does a great job of bringing in music, theatre, and comedy acts to campus, as well as prominent speakers. For example, while I was at Cornell, I saw No Doubt play a show, went to see Jon Stewart, and President Bill Clinton delivered my commencement address. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Stephanie: Cornell is the largest Ivy League school with a student body of around 13,000, but the way the university divides itself by colleges makes it feel much smaller. Class size varies depending on subject matter and the particular college. Large classes will typically include both seminar (where new materials are presented) and a section that is taught by a TA with a class size of 10-15 (where material is reviewed). VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Stephanie: I dont think I can think of just one experience that I loved! I absolutely adored my time at Cornell I really did not want to leave. I found that everything, from the friends that I made to the instruction that I received, were more than I could have hoped for. Check out Stephanies tutoring profile. The views expressed in this article do not necessarily represent the views of Varsity Tutors.

Math Tips from a Calculus Tutor

Math Tips from a Calculus Tutor Today we welcome Cory Sweet, veteran math tutor and South Bay calculus department head, to our blog! Cory is sharing his top three math tips for success in any math class, from algebra 1 all the way up through AP calculus and beyond.Math Tip #1: Show your work! (No mental math!)My first math tip to help you succeed is something all of your math teachers are already telling you to do on every test, quiz, and homework assignment: show your work! By showing your work on every problem, you’re actually helping the teacher and yourself. On tests and quizzes, this is your chance to show your teacher what you know. When you only write down the final answer, the teacher has no idea if you know and understand the process of getting to that answer. It might as well be a random guess, or even a result of cheating! When you present your work neatly and efficiently, you demonstrate that you know all of the steps to reach the answer. In case you still have questions, consider Private Tutoring At Home. There is a second part to this math tip: by showing all of your work, you’re not doing any math in your head. One thing I tell all of my students is that doing math in your head is a great party trick, but it gets you nothing on tests and quizzes. I can’t even begin to count the number of mistakes I’ve seen students make when they could have easily used a calculator or written out the problem. By doing math in your head, you’re more likely to make a mistake! Instead, write out each step, check your math with a calculator (if allowed), and work methodically and at a decent pace. Writing down your work won’t fix every mistake, but it will reduce your chances of making them. Bonus: if you do make the occasional mistake, your teacher is more likely to give you partial credit if they can see your process.Math Tip #2: Study a little bit each dayMy second math tip has to do with worst and best studying practices. Imagine that you have a test on Friday, and you estimate that two hours of studying should be plenty. Some students will study for two hours the night before the test, thinking that this will be enough time to learn the material.I’m here to tell you that cramming the night before the test is one of the most inefficient ways to study. It is only slightly better than not studying at all! By having a two-hour study block the night before, you might create more problems for yourself. First, You might stay up late to finish other homework and so are too tired to do well on the test. Also, you might encounter a concept that you don’t understand, with little time to learn it. Lastly, you might not actually learn the material that well!I want you to think of something you enjoy but need to practice to improve. This could be an instrument, a sport, a gameâ€"anything that requires effort. Now, I’m going to offer you two ways to study: you can practice for two hours at 4 p.m. for a week or for ten hours on a Saturday. Which did you choose? Hopeful ly the first option! Both take the same amount of total time, but you will retain more over a longer period. One word comes to mind when I think about practicing for ten hours straight: fatigue. Instead, the best way to study is to practice persistence and do a little bit each day. With regular practice, you can train yourself to think differently, develop muscle memory, and improve performance and technique. After all, slow and steady wins the race!Math Tip #3: Spaghetti on the wallMy final math tip concerns what you should do when you come across a problem that you’re not sure how to tackle. I am a huge advocate of throwing spaghetti at a wall and seeing what sticks. No, this doesn’t mean you should start playing baseball with pasta. Rather, it means that trial and error in math is often a valid approach. Far too often I’ve seen this situation: a student will read a math problem and then will think and think and think but never do anything, frozen with indecision. My advice: pick something and just give it a try. There’s no way of knowing if that problem-solving method in your head will work until you actually put pencil to paper and try it out. If it doesn’t work, it’s not a big dealâ€"turn your pencil around, erase, and try again! Each time you try a new strategy, you’ll get a little closer to solving the problem. You might notice a piece of information you missed the first time, spot a careless mistake, or realize that you need to draw a diagram. Even if you don’t end up getting the right answer, you may still get some partial credit from your teacherâ€"better to have something written down on the paper to show that you engaged with the problem! Thanks, Cory, for all those great math tips! Taking a Summer Break from Anxiety for Teens with ADHD

Taking a Summer Break from Anxiety for Teens with ADHD Summertime typically provides a much-needed break from the academic and social pressures of school for kids with ADHD. Elementary school kids can spend their summers involved in activities that play to their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. They have an opportunity to focus on making new summer friends, forming friendships that arent complicated by school anxiety and stress. In an ideal world, teenagers with ADHD also have the chance to take a real summer break from high school pressures. However, as competition for college admissions and career success grows, many high school students are increasingly encouraged to maximize their summer breaks by participating in experiences that will bolster their chances of getting into their preferred college. This often means seeking out competitive internships and participating in multiple sports or intense extracurricular activities, sometimes while also holding down a part-time job. Taking a break from the social pressure of high scho ol is also more challenging with social media playing such a prominent role in teenage social life. Teens continue to feel the pressure to keep up with their classmates, often comparing themselves to their peers and scanning Instagram posts to make sure theyre not missing out on (or being left out of) events and activities. This year-round pressure is just one of many factors that researchers and clinicians think may be driving the rise in anxiety among teenagers. A recently published article in the Journal of Developmental Pediatrics found that in the U.S. rates of anxiety disorder diagnoses increased 20% between 2007-2012.1 Many clinicians suspect that rates have increased even more rapidly between 2012 and 2018. In fact, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, about one-third of todays adolescents will experience an anxiety disorder during their lifetime. Teens with ADHD are at even higher risk, with up to 50% experiencing significant anxiety. While some of the factors driving up teen anxiety are pervasive and cant be changed in a single summer, there are still many things parents can do to help their teens keep anxiety in check. Help your teen focus on experiences that are meaningful and personalized. Its smart to start thinking about college and career paths early on, and to use time away from school to build skills and experiences that bolster college and career success. But for teens with ADHD who have struggled to succeed in school, and whose self-confidence has eroded over time, focusing first and foremost on finding activities and internships that build confidence and self-esteem is important. Encourage your teen to think about the big picture and seek out experiences that tap into his or her strengths and minimize weaknesses. Ideally these experiences should be in areas that your teen is passionate about, where he or she can feel confident in his or her knowledge and abilities and be an equal or a leader among his or her peers. Encourage your teen to devote some time working on academic skills. A complete break from academics during the summer months can make it difficult for teens with ADHD to start the new school year off with confidence. So, while your teens activities and internships should play to his or her strengths, that doesnt mean your teen shouldnt spend any time building up weaker academic skills. The trick is to set your teen up for success by providing him or her with academic experiences that build confidence as well as skills. Working with learning professionals who provide personalized instruction tailored to your teens learning style and strengths is the most surefire path to academic confidence and success. Quality family time is important. Its normal and healthy for teens to prefer to spend time with friends rather than family. But, that doesnt mean that family time isnt important. In fact, family time can provide a healthy break from social pressure, and the anxiety that comes with it for many teens with ADHD. Schedule family activities that include a break from technology when teens (and their parents) dont check their social media accounts for extended stretches of time. The focus of this time should be on blocking outside distractions and spending quality time with each other. Activities that are naturally less compatible with cell phone use (like hiking, swimming, amusement parks, paintball, horseback riding, trampoline parks) will help make the technology breaks a little easier. Work with a therapist if your teen seems highly anxious or unmotivated. Finding time for therapy appointments can be hard during the school year. If you are worried about your teens level of anxiety, or if he or she seems to be constantly irritable or unmotivated, use the summer months to find a therapist who can meet with you and your teen to assess his or her mood and anxiety. Even a few appointments with a good therapist can make a big difference when it comes to treating anxiety and having a go-to therapist your teen can meet with if anxiety spikes in the fall can mean getting treatment more quickly when your teen needs it the most. Journalists Are Not The Enemy

Journalists Are Not The Enemy via @realDonaldTrump While Trump is not the first president to criticize the media, he is the first to declare the media as the enemy of the public, and this allegation should not be ignored. After all, the definition of an enemy is a hostile force, which harms someone or something else. So is the media truly damaging the public? The media cannot directly or physically injure individuals; however, it is possible for the media to indirectly harm the public via legitimate fake news coverage. Although, there are certain fictitious news stations and publications that are exceptions, for example satirical news sources like The Onion. It is critical to note the importance of free press. After all, how would the public have found out about the President Nixon’s Watergate scandal? While the merit for free press should be prevalent, it is vital that the public should also be free to draw their own opinions of a specific news outlet and know how to determine whether or not a particular article has merit. According to Shepard Smith, a Fox News anchor, Fake news refers to stories that are created often by entities pretending to be news organizations solely to drive clicks and views based on nothing of substance. While sources such as the New York Times, NBC News, ABC, CBS, and CNN may not report favorable opinions regarding particular news, these networks are not fake news. Smith continued to defend sources, such as CNN, by stating, Its [CNN] journalists follow the same standards to which other news organizations, including Fox News, adhere.” Although slight, moderate and severe bias can be present in a news outlet, bias does not conclude whether or not a source is fake. After all, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, and the New York Times pride themselves on constructing factual news, and these sources would not knowing hinder their organizations credibility based on blatant made-up nonsense as Smith defines fake news. There are many components that construct an accurate, transparent and trustworthy news source. Credibility is key to determining whether or not a specific source is worth listening to and believing. However, there are many factors that are attributed to a given source’s integrity. Of which, a reader should evaluate a source’s authority, accuracy, and its bias to conclude if the news outlet is indeed trustworthy. While the following criteria can assist the public in determining the quality of a news network, they do not justify calling a source fake news. 1. Authority: Obviously it holds more weight when a staff writer from the Washington Post, which has won the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting in 2008, covers a recent news event as opposed to a fitness blogger covering today’s news. Nevertheless, it is not to say that a fitness blogger cannot accurately research and craft an articulate news article; however, the fitness blogger would not have the same degree of jurisdiction as a news outlet, such as Fox News which has over twenty years of experience in news. Therefore, Fox News has a longer resume than the blogger, which would give Fox News more authority in news and politics than the blogger. 2. Accuracy: Are the facts, well, factual? Simple research can help you determine if figures and facts in an article are indeed correct. A quick way to determine if statistics in an article are factual, search for the same coverage from an opposing news source. 3. Bias: Bias has been around forever and will likely continue to be around forever, as everyone has a preconceived belief about nearly everything. While most media outlets are labelled as either liberal or conservative news, they are able to produce unbiased news. Even if a source chooses to take a slightly liberal or conservative take on a specific story, the source’s coverage can still have credibility, as they can include both views of the same issue. However, it is important that the public be able to differentiate between a story’s angle and bias. Thankfully, there are several types of bias that can be easily detected within the media. The ambiguity effect is a cognitive bias where there is a lapse in information. In the media, the ambiguity effect would be prevalent in quantities and statistics. For example, if a reporter stated that most people do not like a specific online publication, this is ambiguity effect. Instead of stating an exact or approximate figure of how many people do not like said source, the reporter used a vague term (i.e. most). The use of ambiguous terms is often used to promote a particular source’s sources or overall argument. Confirmation bias is where you agree with people who agree with you, or who have similar views as you. Confirmation bias can be present in both the general public as well as the media. It is present in the public, because people are biased toward news outlets who share the same believes as them; therefore, these individuals might be more inclined to believe a particular station’s new coverage versus a media outlet with an opposing view. However, you can easily detect confirmation bias in the media. A magazine that practices confirmation bias would likely quote like-minded sources, as opposed to sources that would contradict their content. Wording bias can exist in the media, where journalists can draw biased conclusions from leading questions during an interview. The questions themselves are not biased; however, the result of which can create bias in reporting. Wording bias can be detected in content if a journalist summarizes too much of an interaction, rather than directly quoting the source(s). Bias by omission is when a source omits the opposition’s argument and/or sources. Bias by omission can occur in a single news clip or article, or it can occur over time if a source omits the opposition’s side in multiple articles. Labeling bias takes place when a news source labels an individual or group of individuals to benefits the source’s argument. For example during the 2012 presidential election, select news outlets labeled Mitt Romney as a “snob” or an “elite”. Because of these particular labels, the public was able to develop a biased opinion of Mitt Romney. The media outlets that the POTUS has specifically accused as “fake news” are as follows: New York Times, NBC News, ABC, CBS, and CNN. All of which, are long-running news outlets. However, are they credible or are they indeed fake? According to the Pew Research Center, news outlets such as the New York Times, NBC, ABC, CBS, and CNN are all liberal media sources, based on their average viewers. Although these media sources might deliver some liberal spins on current events, according to the survey these sources are only slightly liberal, with the New York Times having the most prevalent liberal ideation out of the bunch. While too much bias is never inherently beneficial, especially in the media, the round table technique prevents any media bias from becoming overbearing. The round table technique is when members with opposing views review and comment on a topic or issue. The aforementioned method allows Fox News, a slightly conservative news source, and MSNBC, a slightly liberal source, to cover that same topic with different opinions. Ultimately, round tabling allows diversity to flourish within the media. Likewise, it is important to take into account whether an article can be categorized as a piece of opinion editorial (or op-ed). Op-ed articles are often written to portray an author’s particular opinion(s) about a matter, by disassociating that opinion from the actual publication itself. For example, my 3 Reasons The EPA is Already Great article is an op-ed, because I have expressed my personal opinions on why the U.S. EPA is a trustworthy and unbiased source for taxpayers to receive information from. While I have published this article on Uloop News, my opinion is not affiliated with Uloop News and therefore is not Uloop News’ opinion, nor is it factual even if it does quote or reference facts or factual events. While it is important to be vigilant of bias and credibility when reading the news, it is also crucial to recognize bias from the sources that criticize the media. It is a bit hypocritical that the Trump administration would out the media as an enemy of the people, or claim that specific news outlets are fake, seeing as members of the Trump administration have broadcasted their own fake news and are guilty of their own bias. During an interview with MSNBC on February 2nd, Kellyanne Conway, referenced the Bowling Green massacre, which she had claimed was an act of terrorism by two Iraqi refugees. Evidently, this massacre never occurred. Kellyanne later correct her statement, claiming that she had meant to say “Bowling Green terroists” during her interview. However, @CityofBGKY continued to revise her statement, clarifying that there was never a massacre in Bowling Green in 2011. @KellyannePolls @CityofBGKY Declinism is the ideology that an entity is declining, despite contrary evidence. Trump might think that the New York Times’ audience is on the decline; however, CEO Mark Thompson denies these allegations, by citing the 220 million individuals who accessed the publication in November 2016 alone. @realDonaldTrump Likewise, the Trump administration is guilty of bias by omission, after select liberal media sources were blacklisted from a White House press briefing on February 24th. Of the news sources barred from the non-televised briefing, BBC, CNN, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, POLITICO, New York Daily News, The Hill, the Daily Mail, and BuzzFeed appear to be the only sources that were not permitted during the meeting. While the White House has denounced rumors that the administration only barred news outlets with unsatisfactory views of the administration, the news outlets allowed into the briefing included noticeably conservative sources, such as Breitbart News, One America News Network and  The Washington Times, and Fox News. However, there were a few slightly liberal networks present at the briefing, including ABC, CBS, NBC, Bloomberg, as well as Reuters, which is not particularly biased. Though the banned press was not allowed into James S Bradys Press Briefing Room, they were allowed into White House Press Secretary Sean Spicers West Wing office. It is important to note that POTUS Trump is not the first president to prohibit a fake news source from attending a White House press event. In 2009, the Obama administration restricted Fox News from attending a briefing. Shortly after the administrations turmoil with Fox News, other media outlets with similar and opposing views proceeded to protest press briefings that excluded Fox News. Like in 2009 and 2010, the present White Houses dismissal of hand-picked news networks has resurrected a detrimental dilemma for the public. Hand-picking certain media outlets for a non-televised discussion creates media bias, as it manipulates the coverage that is permitted to be released to the public. Because Trump appears to be biased against mildly liberal news sources and is also practicing a cognitive bias himself, he is not likely a credible source to gather information from. It is beyond deplorable that POTUS Donald Trump would make the broad accusation that the media is the enemy, particularly since 1992  256 United States journalists have been killed in the name of their job, which is to gather, dissect and curate information for the general public. In addition to comprehending what is and isn’t legitimate fake news, it is important that you voice your opinions about the credibility of the media, by completing the Trump administration’s Mainstream Media Accountability Survey.
